 Internet message boards have been around for almost as long as the internet has been available. They are popular for many reasons. First and foremost they allow people from all over the world to talk about a similar topic. There are online forums for just about any topic you can think of. On these forums people can also mold their online persona in the way of a profile, most notably their avatar.


People create an avatar as a way to stand out. The avatar gives them an online persona that words simply can't provide. In most cases, people remember another user's avatar before they remember their actual username. That is only true of course if they keep the same one for an extended period of time. A lot of people choose to change theirs on a regular basis.


The possibilities are endless when it comes to choose what you want to use to represent yourself. Some people go for their own actual picture while others opt for a picture of their pet or car. It really depends on the person and what the message board is about. A board for the Philadelphia Eagles for instance would have a lot of current and former Eagle players represented. A forum for dog lovers would no doubt have a lot of pictures of their actual dogs for theirs.


Online message boards will continue to be popular and allowing users to create avatars is a big reason for that. They give board members the chance to stand out and have some individuality online.
