The Convoluted Power Paths in the World of Apple and Microsoft
Skype Setting Its Sights on iPhone, Android, and iPad but not Microsoft
Those of you who own an iPad are probably painfully aware of its lack of a native Skype app. While the iPhone version works totally fine on the iPad, it isn't very elegant. If you enlarge the app to take advantage of the extra screen real estate, you find it is pixelated and ugly.
All of that is about to change soon. Skype just announced that they plan on refocusing their efforts towards Android and iPhone OS while avoiding Microsoft-based mobile operating systems. The move will help them to release a native Skype app for the iPad and a new Skype iPhone app for the new iPhone and iPhone OS 4.0 coming this summer.
For those who haven't used Skype before, it is a Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) phone application that allows you to place international calls for a remarkably low price. It is especially handy on devices like the iPhone, Nexus One, and others because it allows its users to bypass long distance charges and international calling fees while on the go. iPad users are also enjoying the limited Skype app they have right now, chatting with friends while making breakfast in the kitchen or holding conference calls from the comfort of the living room couch.
Newer and better Skype apps will be a boon to small business owners and professionals who use the service every day. We can't wait to see how they take advantage of the iPad and the new iPhone 4.0 in the months to come.
The Week In The World of The iPhone, iPad, and Smart Devices Everywhere
Just a few weeks ago, Apple announced that the iPad sold one million units in the first month alone. As if that weren't already amazing, here is another figure that will blow your mind. The iPad is selling twice as many units as the Mac. According to RBC Capital Markets analyst Mike Abramsky, the iPad is selling more than 200,000 units per week while the Mac continues to sell 110,000. This still isn't as fast as the iPhone has been selling (246,000 per week), but If sales continue to remain at their current levels, Apple will have sold 8 million iPads by the end of the year. That is about 3 million more units than the company had originally expected.
And we haven't even gotten started with the iPhone 4G, scheduled to be revealed in June. Those of you who have been waiting for internet tethering through your iPhone will be happy to know that it is very likely to be a part of iPhone OS 4.0.
Internet tethering allows you to use your iPhone as a mobile hotspot for your laptop device. You can take advantage of your 3G or 4G connection to turn the side of the road or the back of your friend's car into an office. This opens up a lot of possibilities for professionals who are always on the go.
Of course, we must mention that the new feature is still a rumor. MacRumors discovered a configuration page while playing with the latest beta release of iPhone OS 4.0. Time will tell if the rumors amount to anything, but if they do, it will be a giant leap forward for iPhone users everywhere.
